Hi, I live in Quebec/Canada where we have -40 to +40°C. I started 3 years ago and I put Exterior Translucent Wood Stain by Saman on cedar wood. They said one coat is enough, but I did two. Last year, on pin wood, I decided to try boiled linseed oil, two coats too (I just do the exterior). This year, I bought a hive with wax coating to compare the efficiency. I like to keep the natural wood colour. Also, linseed oil and beeswax coating are smells bees like. As two of my hives have a chalet roof, I used a paint/primer 100% acrylic flat white exterior paint just to give a better protection on the top, made by Sico.

are you trying to kill bees? spread Varroa? AFB? Small hive beetle? Always try to minimize robing. Do not encourage it. You are doing all of the bee keepers, feral hives and even local pollinators in your area a grate disservice with this behavior.

WOW I only found your channel today and watched your first video from 7 years ago and have watched your progression and honestly you’ve blown my mind with how cleverly thought out, designed and built your version 2. You give me confidence that I can and will be successful with my bees when they arrive this Spring. I have been learning what I need to do from other beekeepers in our local area but I have watched so many UA-cam videos on what I may need to do and by far yours has been the most enlightening. Great job mate :) I know what I am going to be doing for the next week….binge watching all of your videos :) Just marvellous. Cheers Theresa - South Coast Australia

Good on you mate. I am in Australia and due to circumstances out of my control I didn’t get my bees this past spring. Ive spent that time joining a local beekeeping association and have gone out to do hive inspections and general beekeeping protocols so that I am more prepared for this coming spring when I finally get my nuke of bees. I am using flowhive and will be one of the only people in our area with this hive as most of the beekeepers that started with flowhive have ditched it…with that being said I need to decide for myself after spending so much money on my new flowhive whether this is going to work for me. We have a strawberry and flower farm and this will be our second year, varroa is about to his our area for the first time EVER which is a really frightening prospect and a lot of bees will be coming into our area due to our biannual native trees and we have been told that all of the native swarms will start to die this season due to varroa. Im all about keeping my hive healthy and will be using formic if the need arises more like when the need arises. I have also made a very big decision to also get a hive of Australian stingless bees that don’t get varroa but can help with pollination. I thankyou for sharing your journey of beekeeping as a beginner…we are all beginners at some time and as beginners we have to teach ourselves and learn from any good or bad decisions we make. Cheers Theresa (Australia)

These are post-spun “wet frames”, a couple wax moth frames with honey I can’t save, and a couple old bee barn frames that I’m going to scrape and let the bees make new foundation on. All of this honey will go right back into the hives, so it’s either consumed or stored. Nothing is wasted.
